1. Cari Penjelasan detail apa itu Subject,
Verb, Complement, Modifier
· Subject
The Subject of a sentence is the noun, pronoun, or noun phrase that precedes and governs the main verb. The subject is the part of the sentence that performs an action or which is associated with the action.
For example :
- He is really nice guy
“He” is the subject of the sentence, controlling the verb and the complement
To Determine the subject of sentence, first isolate the verb and then make a question by placing “who?” or “what?” before it. Having identified the Subject, we can see that the reminder of the sentence tell us what Subject does or did. We refer to this string as the “predicate” of the sentence.
For example :
- Who plays the piano?
“David” (= Subject)
“plays the piano” (= Predicate) tell us what David does.
· Verb
Verbs are a class of words used to show the performance of an action (do, throw, run), existence (be), possession (have), or state (know, love) of a subject. To put it simply a verb shows what something or someone does.
For example :
- Paul rides a bicycle.
- We buy some books to learn English verbs.
The verb tense shows the time of the action or state. Aspect shows whether the action or state is completed or not. Voice is used to show relationships between the action and the people affected by it. Mood shows the attitude of the speaker about the verb, whether it is a declaration or an order. Verbs can be affected by person and number to show agreement with the subject.
There are two other forms that the verb can take, depending on the tense type and time, the simple past form and the past participle.
· Complement
A complement is the part of a Sentence that comes after the Verb and is needed to make the sentence complete.
Example of Subject Complement:
Mr. Mamat was a great headmaster (mr mamat adalah kepala sekolah yang hebat)
Ket:
Ket:
- headmaster (predicate noun) = menerangkan subjek (Mr. Mamat)
· Modifier
Tell the time, place or manner of the action. Very often it’s a prepositional phrase. Prepotional phrase is a group of words that begin with a preposition and ends with a noun.
Note :
- A modifier of time usually comes last if more than one modifier is present.
Example of prepositional phrases :
o In the morning, at university, on the table
- A modifier can also be an adverb or an adverbial phrase :
Last night, hurriedly, next year, outdoors, yesterday
Last night, hurriedly, next year, outdoors, yesterday
Example :
o John bought a book at the bookstore
(modifier place)
o Jill was swimming in the pool yesterday
(modifier of place)(modifier of time)
Note :
The modifier normally follows the complement, but not always. However, the modifier, especially when it’s a prepositional phrase, usually can’t separate the verb and the complement.
Example :
o She drove the car on the street

Little Red Riding Hood
Once upon a time, there was a lovely little girl called
Little Red Riding Hood. She had this name because her grandma gave her a little
red hood, and she wore it every day. Her grandmother loved her very much.
One day her mother said to her, “Little Red Riding
Hood, please take this basket of food to your grandmother. Be careful on the
way, and do not leave the path”.
“Don’t worry mum, I’ll be careful!” said Little Red
Riding Hood to her mother, and set out on the way to her
grandmother’s.
Her grandmother lived in a village on
the other side of the wood. As Little Red Riding Hood entered the wood,
a wolf met her. She had never seen a wolf before, so she didn’t know they
were dangerous.
“Good day, Little Red Riding Hood. My name is Wolf.
Nice to meet you”.
“Hi Wolf. Nice to meet you too”.
“Where are you going, Little Red Riding Hood?”
“To my grandmother’s house”
“Where does she live?”
“She lives in the village on the other side of the wood over there. It’s the
first house in the village”, replied Little Red Riding Hood.
The wolf walked next to Little Red Riding hood, and
then said “Look at those pretty flowers! Why don’t you pick some for your
grandmother?”
Little Red Riding Hood looked and saw all the pretty
flowers. She ran off the path, and started picking a bunch of flowers for her
grandmother.
Meanwhile, the wolf ran straight to grandmother’s house and
knocked on the door.
“Who’s there?”
“Little Red Riding Hood,” replied the wolf. “I have
some food for you, please open the door!”
Grandmother opened the door. The wolf quickly jumped in
and pushed grandmother into the closet.
“Help! Please let me out!” cried grandmother.
“Be quiet and stay in the closet!” The wolf put
on Grandmother’s dress, cap and glasses, and got into Grandmother’s bed.
After Little Red Riding Hood had picked a big bunch of
flowers, she finally arrived at grandmother’s house. She saw the open door, and
called out “Good Morning!”. There was no answer. She slowly went into the
bedroom, and saw her grandmother lying in bed, looking very strange.
“Oh! grandmother,” she said, “what big ears you have!”
“All the better to hear you with, my
child,” was the reply.
“But, grandmother, what big eyes you have!” she said.
“All the better to see you with, my
dear.” said the wolf.
“But, grandmother, what large hands you have!”
“All the better to hug you with.”
“Oh! but, grandmother, what a terrible big mouth you
have!”
“All the better to eat you with!”
The wolf jumped out of bed and wanted to eat Little Red
Riding Hood. She shouted loudly and tried to run away.
Just then, a hunter was passing the house. He heard Little Red
Riding Hood’s cry and went into the house.
“Go away, wolf!” said the Hunter.
He pulled out his bow and shot the
wolf. The wolf ran away, and Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother lived
happily ever after.
